Frequently Asked Questions about Adams


How many students attend Adams?  In 2009-10 Adams enrollment is 180 students.  The grade configuration is:  Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 3rd-4th grade multiage, 4th-5th grade multiage and 5th grade.


How long is the school day?  The day for students in grades 1-5 starts at 8:25 with dismissal at 2:35.  Kindergarten is 8:25-11:00 am.


What special classes are offered? We have PE and library taught by certified specialists.


Is there on site aftercare?  Eugene Parks and Rec Department provide Creative Care, Y.M.C.A provides Plum Tree. Plumtree has a before and after-Kindergarten program for children that need care for the entire school day. Early registration for after care is encouraged. And ACE is available free for grade 1-5 students.   


How does Adams handle discipline? Adams follows a POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT system in the classrooms and throughout the building.


How about recess? The children have a 15-minute recess in the morning and a 20-minute recess after lunch. Activities are free choice. The kids choose ball games, hopscotch, jump rope, swings, monkey bars, large play structures and “pretend”.


What kinds of field trip opportunities exist at Adams?  We go to Darby’s Farm, the Pumpkin Patch, the Hult Center, Madison Meadow, Nearby Nature and Mt. Pisgah. Field trips vary by classroom. Some other adventures include the Oregon Coast Study, Salmon Study, the State Capitol and Sustainability Conferences.


Do the children have snack time? Adams follows the 4J Wellness Policy. Students are encouraged to bring nutritious snacks from home. Often parents send in healthy snacks for the class.


Does Adams have a library?  Adams has one of the best elementary school libraries in the city. Our librarian, Molly Hansbrough is a winner of the Oregon State Librarian Award.  Adams is the only 4J elementary school with a certified librarian.


What types of school–wide activities exist?  We have a Watermelon Feed, Family Technology/Math Night,      Dr.Seuss Celebration, Martin Luther King Celebration, Book Fair, Talent Show, Peer Mediation Training for grades 4 and 5, Artist-in- Residence, Human Dignity Week and Book It-Bag It.


What computer opportunities are available? All children have access to laptops. Classrooms have Smartboards and document cameras.  All students have access to laptops and handheld PDAs.


What is project-based learning? Project-based learning an approach to Education and Curriculum that makes learning “come alive” for students by creating essential questions, doing original research, presenting findings and taking action on issues that matter to the larger community.
