Announcements for Friday, May 18:

1. Friday's Green Team lunch compost consultants are Natalie White for 1st lunch, and Callysta B for 2nd lunch. Cal Young students, help us go green by putting your fruit and vegetable scraps in the yellow compost buckets in the cafeteria or courtyard.

2. Do you want to send a special note to a special someone? Today, come to the lobby at lunch to make a shut-out that might end up in the Zinger. Shout-outs will be at both lunches, so eat something and then come and make a shout-out!

3. It's SPIRIT WEEK! Can you find your TWIN today? Whether or not you can, be sure to bring your twin and your friends to the last Activity Night of the year, tonight from 6:30-8:30. $5.00 will get you through the door for dancing, movies, games, and more. Monroe students are invited. See you there!

4. This week's winner of the Queen Dewey Bookmark drawing is Sara S. Sara recommends The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Sara, come to the library at break to collect your prize!

5. Today is the last day to turn in your DFZ slogan search form for an instant prize from the office and a chance at one of three larger prize packages to be given at next week's DFZ assembly. If you haven't started yet, you can still pick up a form from the office and search out as many slogans as you can from the posters in the halls. Whether you are just starting to write the phrases down or you are holding onto a search form from earlier in the week, turn it into Jodi in the office by 4;00 today! Remember, DFZ, it is the way to be!

6. Attention 8th graders! Students in Mr. Schiff's 6th period yearbook class are creating the first ever blog featuring 8th grade memories. If you have any pictures, videos, artwork, or stories you would like to see on the website, please e-mail them to Mr. Schiff. (Schiff@4j.lane.edu) If you want to give someone a shout out, there will be a box in the office for you to submit them. We'll be accepting content until Thursday, June 7th! Thank you, from the 6th period yearbook staff.

7. Help celebrate the Walk and Bike to School Challenge during lunch on Friday by making a tasty smoothie using a bicycle powered blender! The bicycle blender will be set up on the courtyard during both lunches for you to pedal your way to a tasty, healthy treat. Thanks for participating in the Boltage and Walk and Bike to School Challenge.

8. We are looking for students that have a talent or skill they would like to share with rest of the school. The Cal Young Variety show is coming. Please sign up on the window outside the office. List all individuals that will be in your act, band, dance or whatever. List equipment you will need. You will be contacted to audition and practice several times during the next couple of weeks. Good luck to everyone.

9. Here's another green tip to reduce your carbon footprint: Try bundling errands together to reduce how far you need to travel. Going back-and-forth to the same part of town on different days to run errands uses more gas than if you planned and did everything in the same area all at once. And if you really want to make it a "carbon freebie," try carpooling and running errands with a buddy.

Have a great day!

Gifts to the Eugene Education Fund made possible 100 grants so far, and more may be sponsored by year end. Details are at www.eef.lane.edu.
Grant support is in addition to donor-earmarked gifts parents and neighbors make through EEF. This steady support means our kids get wider opportunity and more individual attention.

Some of our dreams remain unfulfilled here at Cal Young. If you have not already made a gift this year, would you consider doing so now?
Make your check payable to "Cal Young Middle School EEF" and mail it (P.O. Box 1015, Eugene, Oregon 97440) or bring it to our office.
You can also contribute by credit card or monthly bank transfers. For more information call 541-343-6877 or write eef@4j.lane.edu
