Dear Cal Young Families,
Fall is certainly in full swing and we are all so grateful for our air conditioning with the warm days weÕve had recently. There are many things that we are happy to have in our new space. However, there are still items that are unfinished or need fixing. Please know that we are working as quickly as possible to get everything in smooth running order.
While we have many exciting new areas and a beautiful space for learning, there have been some changes this year that may be difficult for our returning students. The biggest change has been to allow food only in the cafeteria and courtyard. In the past, students were able to eat in the halls, lobby, and the front of the school. This may take some adjustment. We are also asking students to keep only their lunches in their locker. Other food items that they purchase during break and at lunch will not be allowed in the hall. The other big adjustment is that we no longer allow gum. For obvious reasons, 4J Facilities have asked that we not allow students to chew gum at school this year. If you have questions about any of the changes with the new school, please call us.
During the week of October 2, we will have 4J staff members administering the 4J Reading Kit assessments. These assessments provide vital information to teachers about your childÕs reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This information helps to inform decision-making about whether a student will need additional academic support in reading. We will also hope to have these results available to share at parent/teacher conferences.
Overall, your children have all settled in nicely and we are working to ensure that all children feel accepted and safe. If there is an issue that we need to address with regard to student behavior, please let Mr. Chinn or myself know. As a staff, we make every attempt to monitor students in the halls and at lunch, but we realize that we cannot always catch every incident. Your children have been a joy to work with and we look forward to a wonderful year with many exciting activities.
Thank you for entrusting the education and safety of your children to us every day.
We are grateful for your caring and support!
With warmest regards,
Sara

Our free services can help you!
Carpool
Smart Ways to SchoolÕs free SchoolPool service connects families who want to carpool to the same school. YouÕll receive a match list of other registered SchoolPool families whose students live near you. Register online at www.swts.ltd.org or call 682-6212 to request a form.
Walk or Bike
We can help you connect with nearby families at your studentÕs school to form your own travel group. Your group can travel a designated route and pause at pre-arranged places to let more students join the group. If appropriate, parent volunteers may choose to accompany students. Globally, itÕs called a Òwalking (or bicycling) school bus.Ó
Call 682-6212 to get connected.
Ride LTD Free
Students in grades 6-12 can ride LTD free now through June 30, 2007. Students can obtain their free LTD pass directly from their school.
Call 687-5555 or visit <http://www.ltd.org>www.ltd.org to find the best LTD route for your student.
The 4J
calendar gets great reviews, but we've also had a community member ask: How we
can afford to produce such a nice publication?
I thought
you'd like to know:
This year,
financial support from our 3
calendar sponsors--Oregon Community Credit Union, AAA Oregon, and
EWEB--totalled $22,500. That paid for 74% of the our
total cost (printing, photography, design, mail preparation and postage).
After
deducting the sponsorship revenue, the net cost to the district was $7,905.
Would it be
cheaper for the district to use a very simple format? Probably not.
The cost
estimate for a simple black-and-white calendar/handbook on standard paper would
total about $13,000. A
bare-bones publication is not an attractive to sponsors, so we'd probably have
little, if any, sponsorship dollars to help pay for it.
We're very
fortunate to be able to produce a publication of this quality at a very
reasonable cost to the district thanks to community financial support .

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS
HOURS OF SCHOOL
SUPERVISION
It is important for you to be aware of the hours that
there is no supervision of buildings or grounds at Cal Young Middle School. The
school provides supervision only between the hours of 8:00am and 3:40pm Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays.
Wednesdays supervision time is 8:00amand 2:40, and during official
school events and programs that occur before and after school.
School to Inform Parents if Their
Student Receives a Threat
ÒIt has
always been our practice to keep parents informed if their son or daughter
receives a serious threat of violence or harm at school, but it is important
for you to know about procedures
we have implemented to comply with recent changes in State Law. ÒOregon law
requires schools to inform parents if their son or daughterÕs name appears on a
targeted list (i.e., a Òhit listÓ) that threatens violence or harm, or when he
or she receives a threat of violence or harm from another student. We will be
using the following procedure to inform you if your student either receives or
makes a serious threat of violence or harm.
ÒIf your son or daughterÕs name appears on a list threatening violence
or harm, or if he or she receives other threats of violence or harm by another
student, we will attempt to meet with you personally, or talk by telephone,
within 12 hours of learning about the threat. We will tell you about the
threat, who made it (if we know), and the action we are taking to respond to
it. We will also send you a notice within 24 hours, stating that you son or
daughter did receive a threat. Our number one priority will be to make sure
that school is safe for your children.
ÒIf your son or daughter made the threat, we will let
you know that he or she made it and the action we are taking, including
informing the parents of the student who received a threat that your student
made. We are also required by the districtÕs Student Rights and
Responsibilities Handbook to inform the police.Ó
Destination
Imagination - Calling All Parents
Destination Imagination is a national problem-solving competition. Students form teams of 4-7 members, choose 1 of 5 problems and generate the most creative and intelligent solution they can find. For years, DI and it's predecessor "Odyssey of the Mind" were popular components of our TAG program. Cal Young traditionally had teams succeed at the regional competition and go on to the state competition. In the last few years we have had a real problem because we cannot find parent coaches. It is the responsibility of the parent coach to make sure the teams meet regularly to get ready for the competition in March. They cannot help solve the problem so they so do not even need to be as creative or as clever as the kids on the team! Contact Linda Ague, 687-5459, if you would be interested in being a coach. If you think your child might be the kind of creative and clever person who would like to be on a team, tell them to see Linda Ague, the librarian or listen for the announcement of the team organizational meeting coming as soon as we find coaches.
Lost Library Books
Many books never made it back to the Cal Young library last year. While we are glad to see that folks wanted to read them, we would like to have them back. If your summer cleaning unearthed a library book from any library, we will be glad to see that it gets back to it's rightful owner. Then be sure to come on in and check out some of our newest titles!
Young Reader's
Choice Award - On your mark! Get
set! Read!
Looking for a reading suggestion? Now is a good time to start reading the books on the YRCA list. Students need to read at least 2 books from the list to be able to vote in April. This is one of the few awards selected by students and is highly regarded by authors who write for children and young adults. Your student may already have a list in their agenda planner but if not, a list of the books and a brief description can be found at this link from the Cal Young Library site.

Congratulations to the Cal young Band for
winning ÒBest Middle School BandÓ at the Eugene Celebration.
Cal Young Band and Orchestra students will be doing their annual Unicef
concert on Tuesday October 17th
at 7:30 in the Gym. Unicef, the United Nations ChildrenÕs
Fund is a charitable organization that helps to provide medicine, clean water
and sanitation, improved nutrition, basic education and emergency assistance to
children around the world.
Admission is a suggested donation of $3.00 per family or canned goods
which we will be accepting for Food For Lane County.
Researchers are providing us with an
unprecedented understanding of how we think and learn. Now we know that music is a vital part
of a complete education. Our
children can benefit greatly from making music. Now is the time to enroll your children in your local school
music program and to encourage their interest in music.
A Beginning and Intermediate string class will
be starting at Cal Young in Room 302.
It is for 4th and 5th grade students from Coburg,
Gilham, Holt and, Willagillespie.
The students are bussed from their respective elementary schools, but
must find a way home on their own. The class runs from October to June and
costs $225.00. A limited number of
scholarships are available. It is
a wonderful introduction to the Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass! Ms. Fiszman will be visiting the grade
schools through the last two weeks in September. If you would like more information please call 687-5430.
Beginners Tuesday and Thursday 2:30 to 3:30, the first class is October 3rd.
Intermediates are on Monday, 2:30 to 3:30 and Wednesday 1:30 to 2:30, the first
class is Monday October 2nd.
Magazine Sale!
Our annual school-wide magazine
sale will begin on Thursday, September 28th. We appreciate all the support that students, families, and
the community give our major fundraising event. Last year we raised over $18,000. The money is used directly on projects, field trips,
computers and technology, and additional materials for classes that directly
benefit your students. Money from
the annual sales have purchased a sound system for the gym, benches for the
front of the school, computers for the classrooms and labs, and additional
technology for students to use for class.
If you have a chance, please stop by and see the improvements we have
made thanks to your support.
Once again, the magazine sale
will give one lucky student a chance to win a trip to Hawaii! The student who wins this prize will
win a trip for four to Hawaii. In
addition to this prize, we have a variety of other fabulous prizes, including
trips into the Money Machine, a Hummer-Limo Lunch Ride, and a few other great
surprises.
We also invite individuals or
families to sponsor a magazine for the library. Sponsorship will provide students access to current
magazines for the entire year. We
will put a nameplate by the individual magazine or periodical recognizing you
and/or your family. This is done
in collaboration with our magazine drive and we receive a reduced rate for the
library copies. Last year we had
more than 30 magazines sponsored, enabling student to access up-to-the-minute
information on a wide variety of subjects. If you are interested in this sponsorship, please contact
Allan Chinn or Linda Ague for a list of needed magazines.
