Task

In this WebQuest you will select a controversial health issue and assume the role of a community member. Your research will be done from the perspective of that person. You will write a paper AND prepare a persuasive speech defending the point of view of the role you have taken.

Controversial is defined as "relating to controversy; a discussion marked especially by the expression of opposing views."

In taking a position you must consider the perspective of the role you have assumed. The arguments used to defend a position will be based on the personal values of the role you are assuming. The position must be supported with the facts that are held to be true by a person in your role. This means web sites must be evaluated to determine the bias or opinion they are representing.

You will need to interview a person whose role you are assuming. Ms. DeVore, Sam or Julie in the library can help identify appropriate people in the community if you need that kind of assistance. Go to tips on conducting an interview for some helpful information on making the contact and asking good questions.

The paper will be 3-4 pages (double-spaced, 12 font). The speech will be approximately 2 1/2 - 3 minutes. You should develop at least three arguments to support your position. You must use a minimum of four sources, but no more than two web sites. For each topic there are links to 6-8 web sites and magazine articles from Infotrac and EBSCO.

To complete this WebQuest successfully, be sure to know how you will be evaluated and refer to the timeline.
