"Invasion of the Species Snatchers"

A Digital Story

Oregon Public Broadcasting has contacted us to create a series of investigative reports depicting the invasion of non-native species in our natural world. Below you will find a guideline of how to be successful in your project.

I. WebQuest

Log onto the Oregon Public Broadcasting site about Invasive Species. http://www.opb.org/programs/ofg/invasives

1. Read about the Silent Invasion.

Briefly describe the Silent Invasion.

2. Scroll down to Invasive Species Stories from the Field Guide Archives.

Choose two archived episodes investigating invasive species and complete the handout.

3. Read more about invasive species in the article “Oregon Threatened by Invasive Species” by Beth Casper
http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070923/INVASIVE01/709230313

List 5 interesting facts you have learned from the article regarding invasive species.

4. Log onto the Statesman Journal site:
http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=INVASIVE

Watch two episodes from their archives and complete the remainder of your handout.

II. Choose a Topic:

OPB has given us the following links to investigate species for your project.

Log on and navigate the sites to find a list of potential species.

Oregon Invasive Species Council - http://www.oregon.gov/OISC/

The Statesman Journal - http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070923/INVASIVE/70913046

It might be wise to choose a couple of options as we will take choices on a first come first serve basis and we will not allow repeat topics.

III. Investigate

Once your topic has been approved by your teachers, it is time to begin your research. Below are some guiding questions to help you along the way:

What is the species?
What is the scientific name and classification?
Where did it come from?
How did it get here?
Why is the species considered invasive?
What impact is the species having on our natural habitat?
Does your invasive species have a natural enemy? Explain.
Is there a plan for abatement?
If so, what is it?
If not, what suggestions do you have to combat the negative impacts of this species?
If left unchecked, what are the long-term concerns regarding your species?

IV. Take Action

Create a multi-media project in which you synthesize your research and demonstrate what you have learned.

Your completed project should be similar to the episodes you viewed from the Oregon Field Guide and the Statesman Journal.
