History

  • In the fall of 1987, da Vinci Alternative Middle School opened. The Apple IIe's and c's donated by the Apple Computer Company were used to fully equip two classrooms with computers.

  • The vision for the school was - and remains - simple: students would use educational technology in a small school environment to enhance their learning of language arts, science, social studies, and math.

  • In its first year, with only four teachers, da Vinci was open for 6th and 7th grade students. Students were selected by lottery, with the program maintaining gender equality.

  • Today, da Vinci continues its vision to use technology to enhance students' learning of traditional skills. A ratio of 1 computer per student is maintained in language arts classrooms, where students spend a high percentage of each class period writing and using keyboarding skills, and computers are used across all curriculum areas in the program. A COW (computer on wheels), consisting of 16 iBook laptop computers with wireless internet access, was added in 2000.
