Learning about Culture through Proverbs

- Mrs. Berkey's Social Studies class, Nov. 9, 2001

Students compile lists of proverbs they collected from interviews with their parents - what sayings did you hear when you were growing up?

Then they record them on chart pack paper to show to the class.

Lists are then posted for display.

A member from each group shares their list, and counts the multiple entries.

Then students work together to brainstorm about what each proverb means, and what values it reflects about our culture.

Next students will begin to learn about proverbs from other cultures, and think about what they reflect about that culture.

Here's one from Africa:

"Little by little, the camel goes into the couscous."

What do you think this proverb means? E-mail your ideas to Mrs. Berkey! Then students will compare your ideas with theirs.
