About
Eastside
Eastside is a public alternative elementary
school in Eugene. It was started by a grass roots effort in 1975. Admission
is open to all children through a lottery conducted by the 4J School District
in the spring of each year. For details, go to our 4J
website.
Eastside’s program was developed to teach the whole child, and we
measure our success not only on how well Eastside nurtures each and every
child’s intellect, but also how well we nurture his or her creative
spirit, emotional health, and social sensibility. Eastside’s emphasis
on the importance of community produces a sense of emotional security.
We believe this is a necessary prerequisite for children to reach their
full academic potential. Our curriculum fosters the social and emotional
growth that helps students reach their full human potential.
Eastside’s
distinctive practices – including assigning each child to the appropriate
ability group in each Math and Language Arts class, having students set
annual learning goals, and allowing children significant choice in their
academic program, produce a learning community in which every child (beginning
in the first grade) is challenged and instilled with a love of learning.
We have a unique setting, called Advisee where
grades 1 - 5 meet together every day but Wednesdays to discuss social
issues, communication skills, and solve problems that face us. This is
also our venue for celebrations, such as birthdays, Halloween, and Valentine's
Day.
Our fifth graders emerge from Eastside excited about school, able to direct
their own learning, and with strong foundations in critical thinking.
Eastside is located at 3875 Kincaid
Street in Eugene. Eastside’s phone number is 687-3303.
