What is the KEY Program?

KEY stands for Kindergarten Enrichment Year.  It is a fee-based morning or afternoon supplement for Edgewood kindergartners.  Many working families find that it provides a valuable addition to kindergarten and after-school child care.  The program is run by an Instructional Assistant.

What will my child learn in KEY?

Children in the KEY Program benefit from an integrated curriculum that includes art, multicultural units, math readiness, phonemic awareness (an essential component in learning to read), singing, gardening, storytelling and social skills.  There is also ample time each day for students to have free time and regular recesses.

What about lunch?

KEY students eat lunch together in the classroom or our cafeteria.  It is a real bonding time for the children and prepares them for eating in next year’s cafeteria setting.  Lunches may be brought from home or purchased separately from the school cafeteria.

Does KEY operate on the same days as the rest of Edgewood School?

Yes. The KEY Program begins on the very first day of school and is in session on all Edgewood attendance days and within Edgewood’s school hours: 8:35a.m.-2:45 p.m. (1:45 p.m. on Wednesdays.)

There are a number of options available in our community for after-school and non-attendance day care.  Check with Sondee in the Office if you would like more information.

What is the fee?

The fee for KEY is $300 per month for nine Months starting in September.  This has been pro-rated to reflect 179 school days including March, December and June, when we are not in school for full months.  Payment for KEY is due on the first day of each month and may be mailed or delivered to the School Office.  Please make checks payable to Edgewood Community Elementary School.

When do I sign up for KEY?

You will need to sign up for KEY at your earliest convenience.  The program may fills up..

How can I learn more?

Please feel free to contact our Secretary, Sondee Johnson or the Principal, Larry Williams, is you would like to know more about this unique and fun program.  Visits to the KEY classroom are encouraged during the Edgewood school choice tours.

WANTED: Adults to be Reading Tutors

We are excited to continue our “Read Naturally” tutoring program again this year. “Read Naturally” helps students increase their reading fluency.

We are currently seeking adult volunteers who are interested in helping out with this program 1-4 times per month for approximately 35-40 minute time slot. Minimum computer skills are necessary, since the “Read Naturally” program is loaded onto each computer & is easy for students to learn. The adult volunteer’s role will chiefly be listening to students’ accuracy during timed readings & offering encouragement.
