Peer Relations

Peer Relations team plans activities and shares information to promote healthy relationships among our children, prevent bullying, and teach effective social problem-solving skills. The goal of the Peer Relations team is that all children at Edison feel safe and included, develop healthy friendships, and treat each other with respect, compassion and integrity. The committee has created a new program entitled Playground Partners, a group of trained parent volunteers who will provide supplemental supervision and positive interactions during lunch and recess.

The Peer Relations team for 2005-06 includes Denise Jessup, Lisa Namyet, Sarah Bascom, Kristi Durant, Mickey Stellavato, and Jen Thoennes. If you are interested, please contact Denise Jessup.

Book Chat on October 12!

by Lisa Namyet and Beth Stein

Do you enjoy sharing ideas and inspirations about raising kids with fellow parents and other caregivers? Then you should plan to attend the Friends and Family Book Chat on October 12, 7 - 8:30 pm

The book we’ll be discussing is The Friendship Factor: Helping Our Children Navigate Their Social World--and Why It Matters for Their Success and Happiness by Kenneth Rubin (Skylight Press/Penguin Books, 2002). Based on 25 years of research, The Friendship Factor explains how children form and maintain friendships, and shows how every parent/caregiver can become a central part of this critical process. Read it and you will learn strategies and skills that you can use to help the children in your life become socially adept and successful at working with and getting along with others. The Friendship Factor addresses friendship in a non-gender specific way and will provide a good introduction to many issues that we could address in possible future Book Chats down the road.

We’ll meet to discuss this book (which is available at the public library as well as bookstores) on Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Edison. Sponsored by the Peer Relationships Committee of the Parent Council, our gathering will be informal, fun, and informative, so come ready to share your thoughts, questions, and ideas. Mark your calendars--see you in October!

And come back for great articles and resources on peer relations!

under construction.
