Closing or Delay of School

Several times during the past few years, we have found it necessary to delay or suspend school operations due to snow, sleet, and ice or storm damage. The final decision comes from the Education Center administration.

The school district waits until 6 AM to make and broadcast a decision about school delays and closures.

All days missed will be made up in spring.

In the event of potential school closure or limited operations due to hazardous weather, information will be posted on the home page of the District web site: www.4j.lane.edu.

Detailed information will be broadcast on the District radio station, KRVM-FM, 91.9.

Information will also be broadcast on many other local radio and TV stations. However, the best source for detailed information will remain the District web site or the District radio station, KRVM-FM 91.9, because we can ensure that complete and accurate messages at these two locations. Stations that have agreed to carry weather closure announcements between 6:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. include
- KUGN (590 AM, 97.9 FM)
- KPNW (1120 AM, 99.1 FM)
- KSND (93.1 FM)
- KRVM (91.9 FM or 1280 AM).

Our transportation staff are out shortly after 3 AM driving and assessing the roads. Information is communicated between the three metropolitan Eugene-Springfield school districts between 4:45 and 5:15 AM, and the decision-making process is generally complete by 6 AM.

Certain kinds of adverse weather, e.g. high winds, may knock down power lines, resulting in the need for one or more school closures, but not district-wide closure. This information will also be communicated on KRVM-FM 91.9 and on the web site. Unfortunately, we often do not know about the circumstances at a particular school until the lead custodian reports for work on or about 6 AM. Power may or may not be able to be restored by the start of school; all of which makes it difficult to decide on closure in these circumstances prior to 6 to 7 AM.
