Student Support Services, Retention, and Event Exclusion
Student Support Services (SST)
Students that require services beyond those provided at the classroom or
team level are referred to the SST. The SST, which consists of the school
counselor, school nurse, special education consultant, special education
teacher and assistant principal meet every Thursday at 7:45 a.m.
Retention Procedures
1. The principal is authorized to make decisions regarding grade placement in cooperation with the SST and parents. The following procedures must be followed in order for a student to be considered for retention:
2. Teachers must discuss the students lack of academic success and develop a team level Student Assistance Plan that includes participation by the parents.
3. If the team continues to have serious concerns regarding the lack of academic success of the student, they refer the situation to the SST for assistance and direction, which may include referral to a school psychologist.
4. The final decision regarding retention is made at the SST level (and may involve the SST of the possible receiving school). The SST will utilize the Light's Retention Scale to guide their decision regarding the appropriateness of a possible retention.
Exclusion of Student of End-of-year School Events
We have a basic school-wide criteria for student exclusion from end of the year events (team field trips, 8th grade "grad" party), which should be sent home to all parents and explained to students well in advance.
Beginning in mid April 6 weeks prior to field trips and 8 weeks prior to the 8th grade "grad," if students have more than one disciplinary infraction, they may be excluded.
This is to be decided on a per case basis by the Team in collaboration with an administrator. Administrators determine exclusion from 8th grade “grad” party.
Parents of students who are excluded must be informed prior to the event, and a list of excluded students must be sent to the office; an in-school option to students staying home from field trips must also be available (Time-Out Room, one teacher stays behind, etc.).
