A student is assigned to an Advisory teacher/group for his/her three years at Madison. Advisory groups are made up of students who are all in the same grade and students will stay with the same Advisory teacher/group all three years of their middle school experience. Advisory will meet for approximately 50 minutes, twice a month, on a Wednesday. Advisory time will be used for a variety of activities including: comminity service planning and activities, assemblies, academic/behavior monitoring, and strengthening staff/student relationships. Students are expected to become involved in a variety of activities.
One emphasis of Advisory is the monitoring of student achievement through the notebook/study skills program. Behavior is also monitored.
Another major emphasis is to provide a communication link with the school and with parents. Advisory is the place for announcements, student council reports, scheduling, notebook checks, homework, and special activities/assemblies.
Advisories have agreed to work on community service requirements during the school year. Our goal is to develop students to become thoughtful members of local communities and the larger world.
Students are expected:
•
To be in their own Advisory
(no visitors) unless
working with another Advisory on a purposeful activity agreed to by the Advisory
teachers;
•
To work on homework as appropriate;
•
To practice/learn good study skills.
One of the purposes of the Advisory teacher is to be a communication link with the school for parents. If you have general questions about your student, please contact the Advisory teacher. If you wish a regular progress report (Weekly Success Sheet), contact the Advisory teacher. If you have questions specific to a particular class, you should contact the teacher of that class.
If you don’t know or are unsure who to contact, just call the school at 687-4300 and one of the secretaries will get you to the right person or log onto our website at: http://shools.4j.lane.edu/madison/ for teachers e-mail addresses and phone numbers.
Madison’s Advisory program is also coordinated by our guidance department. Each student’s Advisory teacher will serve as their academic advisor and advocate.
Areas in personal development
include:
1. Self awareness/self image
2. Social skills/interpersonal relationships
3. Values, attitudes and beliefs
4. Communication skills
5. Problem solving/decision making
Students will be graded on their participation, attendance,
and work in Advisory. Evaluation appears on the report card in the form of "A" -
excellent, "S" - satisfactory, or "U" - unsatisfactory. A student receiveing more than five tardies to Advisory in a term,
will receive a "U" grade.

Advisory is an important part of our complete school curriculum.
