James Madison Middle School

Approaches to Learning: Writing & Study Skills

A very important aspect of a student’s education at Madison is our school-wide focus on improving "Writing Skills in All Subjects." We require all students to meet basic requirements listed below under "Study Skills Standards" and "Writing Standards." In addition, students should be able to understand and use the school-wide editing symbols to proofread their work. These will be used by teachers who are evaluating students' writing.

Study Skills Standards

NOTEBOOKS

Students will have one loose leaf three ring notebook that will be divided into sections for each class. All notes, assignments, and other materials will be kept in chronological order. Students will also record assignments on an assignment record (planner) to be kept in the notebook. Students will bring their notebook to class each day. Individual teachers will monitor the section of the notebook for their class.

PLANNERS

Planners are required for all students, and should be kept in their binders at all times.

Vocabulary Introduction

All teachers will introduce vocabulary before assigning reading in a content area.

Deadlines

Turn in all assignments on time to receive full credit. Papers which are late due to an excused absence will be accepted without penalty.

Proofreading

Proofread all written work before submitting it for a grade.

Preparing for Tests

Teachers will instruct students on how to study for a test in each class. Teachers will provide students with study guides to help them prepare for tests.

Monitor Long-Term Assignments

Follow time lines given to you by the teacher for long term assignments. Teachers will meet with you at least weekly to check your progress on the assignment and to give help as needed.

Note Taking

Take notes as necessary in each class. Teachers will give you instruction in taking notes.

Writing Standards

Papers should be headed in the upper right hand corner, including name, date, period and subject.
