School Schedules to Change Next Year: Share Your Views
District seeking feedback on second draft schedule

To provide enough instruction time for students, fair and equal learning time at all schools, and consistent schedules for families, Eugene School District 4J is changing to a consistent calendar and standard schedules for all schools in 2018–19. The schedule details will be decided this spring.

A first draft schedule was published in March for staff, parent, student and community input. The district has now taken the input received and developed a second draft schedule for further review and feedback.

The second schedule draft responds to staff and families’ input with a shorter early release on Wednesdays, earlier start and end times for high school, slightly earlier times for middle school, and as many elementary school start times as possible closer to their current times.

The draft schedules provide for elementary schools to schedule 60 minutes of recess and lunch within the regular school day—a little more time than currently provided at most schools and grades. Middle and high schools also would schedule about 60 minutes of lunch, breaks and passing periods during the school day.

Parents and students are invited to take a few minutes to review the second schedule draft and share your feedback in an online input form. Your input is important.

Community Forum on School Schedule

Eugene School District 4J is changing to have a standard schedule and consistent calendar for all schools in 2018–19. This will provide consistent, predictable schedules for families, increase learning time for most students, and ensure that all schools meet state standards for adequate instructional time.

The district wants to hear from community members about their views on school schedules and what various schedule changes would mean for them.

Starting this fall, all schools at each level will have the same calendar, without extra no-school days or half-days at individual schools. The calendars also are more similar between elementary, middle and high schools, with nearly the same no-school days at all school levels.

The daily and weekly schedule of school start and end times is under discussion now and will be decided this spring. A draft schedule has been published for discussion and feedback. This is not the final schedule; schedule decisions have not been made yet. Whatever final schedule is decided, it will require some bell schedule adjustments at every school.

Parents, students, staff and community members are invited to learn more about the draft schedules under discussion and talk with school board members at a community forum.

El distrito escolar de Eugene 4J está cambiando a un horario estándar y a un calendario consistente para todas las escuelas en el año escolar 2018–19. This just a reminder that there is no school on Thursday and Friday (March 15th & 16th), due to grading day and a professional development day for teachers.

School Walkout Demonstrations

Dear families,

In the wake of the most recent school violence tragedy in Florida, there have been nationwide calls for school walkouts on March 14, April 20, and other days, to demonstrate regarding gun violence and school safety. We want our families to be aware that some students may be considering leaving school on these dates and that walkouts are not supported or endorsed by the school.

Student and staff safety is our priority—everyone deserves to feel safe and be safe at school. Earlier this month we shared a letter from our superintendent about our school safety protocols and procedures. At our school we are also working to constructively dialogue with students and promote school safety. We respect our students’ right to express their personal views and encourage them to be informed and engaged community members. However, no matter what the topic, our school and our district cannot condone walkouts or other demonstrations that disrupt the learning environment.

Your child’s education and safety are our primary focus. During school hours, students should be in school—safe, supervised, and learning. The safest place for students to be during school hours is in the school building. If students engage in a walkout they are leaving the supervised school environment.

Our standard expectations for students include attending their scheduled classes and not disrupting the learning environment. Students who choose to participate peacefully in a walkout demonstration receive an unexcused absence for the class period, as outlined in the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook. We expect civil and orderly behavior from our students at all times, and hope that there will be no more disruptive or disorderly conduct that would be subject to disciplinary consequences.

Huelgas Escolares Nacionales Para Demostraciones Politicas

En el vestigio de la tragedia mas reciente de violencia escolar en la Florida, están eventos organizados en todo el país instando a estudiantes a salir de la escuela el 14 de marzo y el 20 de abril y otras días para realizar demostraciones políticas sobre la seguridad escolar y la violencia con armas de fuego. Queremos que nuestras familias estén conscientes de que algunos estudiantes pueden estar considerando salir de la escuela en esas fechas para participar en las demostraciones y que esto no está apoyado o respaldado por la escuela.

La seguridad de los estudiantes y el personal es nuestra prioridad. Todos merecen sentirse seguros y estar seguros en la escuela. 4J Wants YOUR Input!

Building 4J’s Future: We want to hear from you.

The Eugene School District is holding a community conversation about a potential bond measure to improve school buildings and learning materials. Your input is needed!

Most of 4J’s school buildings were constructed in the 1940s to 1960s, and some are even older. Other capital improvements are needed due to changing enrollment, educational program needs and aging buildings and materials.

The district’s long-range facilities plan, updated in 2013 after significant community input, calls for bond measures in 2013 and 2018 to replace, renovate or remodel several school buildings and make other improvements.

Voters approved a bond measure in 2013 and replaced four aging school buildings—Roosevelt Middle School, Arts & Technology Academy, Howard Elementary School and River Road/El Camino del Río Elementary School—and made other building improvements, upgraded technology and curriculum, replaced school buses, and more.

The board is now considering a potential bond measure to be placed on the November 2018 ballot, and wants to hear from community members about their views on priorities and how to proceed. No decisions have been made yet.

Community forums have been scheduled in different locations across the district so community members may choose a convenient time and location. Spanish interpretation will be provided.

It’s School Choice Time!

In Eugene School District 4J, every school offers an excellent education for our students. Students may enroll in their neighborhood school at any time, or request enrollment in a different 4J school, provided there is a place available. School choice requests will be accepted in an order determined by lottery.To be included in the lottery, 4J residents must apply by Wednesday, January 31, at midnight. This is an earlier deadline than in previous years. Non-district residents must apply between March 1 and Friday, April 1, at midnight. All students who want to obtain a transfer must apply, including new incoming siblings and students who have moved but want to stay enrolled at our school.

School visits are scheduled in the month of January. If you have any friends or family members who are considering school choice, please invite them to come learn more about our wonderful school and their school choice options! Madison will offer a School Choice Tour on Tues., Jan. 23, 6:30-7:30pm, and again on Weds., Jan. 24, 10:00-11:00am. This is for parents who live outside the Madison boundaries, but are considering sending their student to Madison.

 

Immunization Exclusion Day Info

Due Date for Complete School Immunization Records

Wednesday, February 21, 2018 is immunization exclusion day this school year.  This means that your student’s school immunization record must be up to date with all required immunizations in order to stay in school.  Letters were mailed at start of December if your student is missing immunizations.  Please return these letters with the dates of shots that were given.  For questions or a duplicate letter, please leave a message for the health assistant at your child’s school.

Fecha Limite Para Completar Los Registros De Inmunización Escolar

El miércoles 21 de febrero de 2018 es el día de exclusión de vacunación para este año escolar. Esto significa que el registro de inmunización escolar de su hijo(a) debe estar al día con todas las vacunas requeridas para poder permanecer en la escuela. Se empezó a enviar cartas por correo a principios de diciembre si su estudiante no tiene algunas vacunas en nuestro registro. Por favor devuelva estas cartas con la actualización de las fechas en que se realizaron las vacunas. Si tiene preguntas o una necesita un duplicado de carta, por favor deje un mensaje con la asistente de salud en la escuela de su hijo(a).
