Student Dignity and Safety Our all school goal: To create a place where everyone learns, has a friend and is included. At Meadowlark, we expect every adult and child to treat each other with respect and safety. This means we will not name call, tease, make fun of or exclude each other. Our district's anti-harassment and anti- discrimination policy is very clear about these issues and we support this policy 100%. It is difficult to feel safe and to learn if we are being emotionally hurt. Instruction Meadowlark's learning environment provides creative, varied learning experiences which allow intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth for all students. Instructional strategies include providing both small group instruction in reading and math and whole class instruction in all academic areas. There is a strong emphasis on project learning and the arts. Our staff is well trained in early literacy assessment and uses a variety of curricula based on the individual needs of our students, helping our students to see themselves as readers, speakers and writers who can accomplish any goal. Our project style learning in science and social science honors individual student's particular talents, while giving them a chance to use/demonstrate their learning in a creative, artistic manner. We are committed to students experiencing the scientific inquiry process through hands-on experimentation, following the process of a real scientist. Math instruction combines the best of constructivist instruction (to build an understanding of what math means) with skill based instruction (to teach students the basic operations needed to be successful in math.) Staff On average, Meadowlark teachers have fifteen years teaching experience. Staff members create an atmosphere of respect and high expectations by the way they treat each other, students and families. Instructors' commitment to education reveals itself through on-going professional development and astounding teamwork. Their spirit, acceptance, instructional expertise and flexibility create the foundation for a first-class learning environment. Technology Technology is integrated throughout our curriculum. Students learn and develop computer skills from kindergarten through 5th grade with a Technology Specialist in our fully equipped iMac lab and our two COWs (Computers on Wheels). COWs are frequently used in classrooms to enhance reading, writing, math, and project learning. Intermediate students also use Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) technology in daily classroom activities. Special Programs Title One Meaningful learning experiences for students in need are supported and furthered by our Title I program. In this program students receive individualized and small group instruction from caring professionals. Parent education is also available through parent workshop night and our family art fair. Tutoring Our commitment to literacy is seen in programs such as OASIS and Read Naturally tutoring. These volunteers work one-on-one with our students, positively changing their lives and their futures. Music Through the generosity of the citizens of Eugene through the City Levy, Meadowlark and Buena Vista share a full time music teacher. Meadowlark students have music instruction twice weekly and have the choice to participate in two after/before school choir programs. Physical Education Our PE specialist supports our students and staff in achieving a healthy lifestyle through fun, structured, developmentally appropriate activities. After School Our after school programs are one more way we meet the individual needs of families and students. Homework Club offers homework support to fourth and fifth graders. Our after school program engages our students in enriching, diverse, engaging activities at no cost to the family. PBS Creating a positive, kind, and respectful learning atmosphere is at the heart of our commitment. Therefore, Meadowlark embraces the philosophy of Positive Behavioral Support (PBS). Students benefit from clearly established behavioral expectations and from having many positive interactions with a wide variety of staff. | |||||||||
