Dear River Road/ El Camino Del Rio families,

I hope that this letter finds you in good spirits and good health and enjoying the last of the summer break. We have been busily preparing the school for the children's arrival and are looking forward to the year ahead. This year promises to be another great year and we are ready to get started.
This year will be the first year in the school's conversion to a dual language Spanish Immersion school. All three of our kindergarten classes and two of our three first grade classes will receive half of their instruction in English and the other half in Spanish. We will have both native English and native Spanish speaking students working and learning together in every class. One of our first grades and our second through fifth grade program will continue to be taught exclusively in English.
We are excited to start our new 4/5 blend class being taught by Lisa Sell and our newly hired partner teacher for her Sam Rapata. Sam comes to us after working as the student achievement coordinator and after school coordinator over at Howard Elementary. Also new, Christine Barajas will be teaching 3rd grade part time and keeping our third grade classes small in the morning. In Kindergarten Louisa Chavez will be teaching full time on the English side and our newly hired Victoria Sanguino will be teaching on the Spanish side. In special ed. Carla Tchack will be joining us as well. She is excited to get started here and River Road after teaching down in Southern Oregon. We are sad to see Carrie Dzienis, Annette Johnston and Joy Goss all move to teaching jobs in other parts of the state or the city for various reasons.
For our fifth year in a row we will continue to offer our Wednesday choice classes every eight weeks. Students will be able to sign up for a choice class they are passionate about learning. We will culminate each eight week session with an assembly. This continues to be a very popular activity at our school and we plan to continue to offer it to all of our students grades one through five.
Our after school BEST program will continue to operate and we will have around eighty spots for students to participate. Students who need extra help in reading and math will be given an invitation into the program in late September. The program will include one hour of reading or math help and one hour of electives such as art, music and theatre. Further, we will continue to have our strings Violin program open to fourth and fifth grade students two days a week after school.
Our parent club and family resource center will continue to offer many family friendly events and activities. I encourage you to bring your family out to these events and get to know the River Road Elementary community. Our parent club will continue to meet once a month on Tuesdays and this can be a great way to find out what is going on here at school and get involved.
Tuesday, September 8th from 3 pm until 4 pm we will have our meet and greet. You will be able to see what class your child is in, meet their teacher and see their classroom. Parents are encouraged to bring their children and meet their child's teacher if they can. Wednesday, September 9th will be the first day of school, school will finish at 1:40 on Wednesday because it is an early release. Kindergarten will have a staggered start this year. All kindergarten students with last names A-K will come on Wednesday, Sept. 9th, all kindergarten students with last names L-Z will come on Thurs., Sept. 10th, all kindergarten students will come on Fri., September 11th.

Estimadas Familias de River Road/ El Camino del Río,

Yo espero que ésta carta les encuentre con un buen espíritu y con muy buena salud y disfrutando de lo que nos queda de las vacaciones del verano. Hemos estado muy ocupados preparando la escuela para la llegada de los estudiantes y estamos ansiosos de otro año escolar que se nos avecina. Este año promete ser otro gran año y ya estamos listo para empezar.
Este año va a ser el primer año de la conversión de la escuela a doble lenguaje. Todos los tres salones del kinder y dos de nuestros primer grados van a recibir la mitad de instrucción en ingles y la otra mitad en español. Vamos a tener estudiantes nativos de habla inglesa y nativos de habla española trabajando y aprendiendo juntos en cada clase. Una de nuestras clases del primer grado y nuestros programas del segundo hasta el quinto continuarán exclusivamente en ingles.
Estamos muy contentos en empezar nuestras clases del 4/5 combinadas que van a ser impartidas por Lisa Sell y nuestro maestro que recién fue contratado, Sam Rapata. Sam llegó a nosotros después de haber trabajado como coordinador del progreso de los estudiantes y coordinador del programa de después de la escuela en la Escuela Primaria Howard. También nueva, Christine Barajas que va a dar clases en el 3er grado medio tiempo, para mantener el tamaño de las clases pequeñas en la mañana. En el kinder Louisa Chávez va a dar clases tiempo completo en la parte de ingles y nuestra maestra recién contratada Victoria Sanguino va a dar las clases en español. En educación especial, Carla Tchack se va a unir a nuestra escuela también. Ella está muy contenta de empezar en River Road después de dar clases en el sur de Oregon. Estamos muy tristes de que Carrie Dzienis, Annette Johnston y Joy Goss obtuvieron otras posiciones en otras partes del estado o ciudades por diferentes razones.
Por nuestro quinto año seguido vamos a continuar ofreciendo la clase alternativa de los miércoles cada ocho semanas. Los estudiantes van a tener la oportunidad de tomar una clase alternativa que ellos quieren aprender. Terminaremos cada ocho semanas con una asamblea. Esto continua siendo una actividad muy popular en nuestra escuela y planeamos continuar en ofrecerla a todos los estudiantes de los grados primero al quinto.
Nuestro programa de BEST va a continuar operando y vamos a tener alrededor de ocho lugares donde los estudiantes pueden participar. Los estudiantes que necesitan ayuda extra en lectura o matemáticas se les va a dar una invitación para el programa a finales de septiembre. El programa incluye ayuda de una hora de lectura o matemáticas y una hora de clases alternas como arte, música y teatro. Además, vamos a continuar en tener nuestro programa de cuerdas (Violín) abierto a los estudiantes del cuarto y quinto grado dos días por semana después de la escuela.
Nuestro club de padres y centro familiar va a continuar ofreciendo eventos familiares y actividades. Yo les pido que traigan su familia a éstos eventos para que así conozcan la comunidad de River Road. Nuestro club de padres se va a seguir reuniendo una vez al mes los jueves y esto puede ser una gran oportunidad para saber que es lo que está pasando en la escuela y para ayudar.
El martes 8 de septiembre de 3 p.m. hasta las 4 p.m. vamos a tener nuestra actividad de venir a la escuela a visitar y conocer el personal. Van a poder venir a ver el salón de su estudiante, conocer a la maestra y ver el salón. Los padres pueden traer a sus hijos para que conozcan a sus maestras si así lo desean. El miércoles 9 de septiembre va a ser el primer día de escuela. Las clases van a terminar a la 1:40 porque los miércoles las clases salen temprano. Las clases del kinder van a empezar un poquito diferente éste año. Todos los estudiantes del kinder con apellidos A-K van a venir el miércoles 8 de septiembre, todos los estudiantes del kinder con apellidos L-Z van a venir el jueves 9 de septiembre, todos los estudiantes del kinder van a venir el viernes 10 de septiembre.
Estamos muy ansiosos de verles muy pronto. La escuela empieza a las 8:15 diariamente y termina a las 2:40 todos los días con excepción de los miércoles cuando las clases salen a la 1:40. Favor de no traer a sus estudiantes antes de las 8:05 a.m. El desayuno es gratis para todos los estudiantes y lo reciben el en salón.
