History Channel site has lots of links, the ability to search and lots of advertising
The Fowler Library has a great beginning site for countries and for geo-politics with a whole series of drop down menus.
This Historical Atlas of the 20th Century uses maps and graphics to share lots of information including disasters and medal winners.

This is Houghton Mifflin's outline map site with no place names.
This site will allow you to create and view (but probably not print) maps by various themes (resources, vegetation, etc)
The CIA has a great collection of maps but they take a while to download.
National Geographics Map Machine is a place to start for all manner of maps
This geneology site is a great source for historical maps.
